Patient was educated on diabetes insipidus and its signs and symptoms as follows:
- Diabetes insipidus is a condition in which the individual produces excessive urine volume, secondary to increased loss of water in the urine, resulting in urine that is very dilute.
- In individuals with diabetes insipidus, the production of vasopressin is either reduced or the kidneys are not responsive to the vasopressin produced in the body.
- Consequently, water reabsorption in the kidney tubules is compromised, resulting in excess water to be lost into urine, making the urine very dilute.
- Individuals with diabetes insipidus also present with increased frequency of urination too, thus contributing to excess fluid loss from the body. with the need to drink large amounts of water.
- Excess loss of fluid in the urine can lead to symptoms of dehydration, symptoms of fluid deficit, and intense feeling of thirst with the need to drink large amounts of water.
