Patient was educated on contraindications for using Sulfonylureas as follows:

  1. Sulfonylureas are mainly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of these medications can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, these medications should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic dysfunction.
  2. Sulfonylureas are mainly excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with renal disease cannot excrete these medications normally. These drugs can stay in circulation for longer time and can be toxic. So, these medications should be used with caution in individuals with compromised renal function.
  3. Sulfonylureas are contraindicated in individuals with history of sulfa allergy. If you are allergic to sulfa, please report it to your physician, for further guidance. Also, discuss with your physician regarding all the prescription and OTC medications that you take daily, to avoid any risk of cross reaction with sulfonylureas.
  4. Individuals with any history of photosensitivity, skin rashes, and sunburns must exercise caution with use of sulfonylureas and report any of these findings to the physician immediately.
