Patient was educated on contraindications for selective Beta-1 blocker used for management of hypertension as below:

  1. Avoid using selective Beta-1 blockers along with any other medications that can cause slowdown of heart rate, such as, calcium channel blockers. Using them together can result in extreme slowdown of heart rate and can present an emergency.
  2. Avoid or use extreme caution using selective Beta-1 blockers along with any other medications that can cause reduced force of contraction of the heart muscle. Using them together can result in exacerbation of symptoms of heart failure along with episodes of extremely low blood pressure and can present an emergency.
  3. Selective Beta-1 blockers are mainly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of these medications can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, these medications should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic dysfunction.
  4. Selective Beta-1 blockers are mainly excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with renal disease cannot excrete these medications normally. These drugs can stay in circulation for longer time and can be toxic. So, these medications should be used with caution in individuals with compromised renal function.
