Patient was educated on contraindications for using Milk of Magnesia as follows:
- Milk of Magnesia has a high tendency to cause fluid depletion and dehydration. Caution must be exercised for fluid replacement and rehydration. Also, Milk of Magnesia is to be taken with a full 8 oz. of water. So, extra caution must be exercised while administering these laxatives for patients placed on fluid limitations, such as, individuals with congestive heart failure and renal failure.
- Milk of Magnesia taken for longer term can result in elevation of serum magnesium levels resulting in symptoms such as motor weakness and reduced respiratory rate. High magnesium level in blood is a significant risk factor for exacerbation of life-threatening arrhythmias. Hence Milk of Magnesia should be used cautiously in individuals with history of arrhythmias.
- Milk of Magnesia usually is contraindicated in individuals with undiagnosed abdominal pain and cramping, as these complaints can deteriorate further with use of laxative.
- Milk of Magnesia is contraindicated in individuals with rectal bleed, as these individuals are at risk for exacerbation of this complaint with laxative use.
