Patient was educated on contraindications for using Merrem as follows:
- Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Merrem. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
- Patients with history of opportunistic infections must be cautious about using Merrem. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
- Patients with history of diminished hearing and ototoxicity are at increased risk for hearing loss with Merrem. Discuss with your doctor regarding safety with Merrem use.
- Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Merrem. Merrem should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
- A minor part of the Merrem given IV is metabolized by the liver and long term Merrem intake can lead to hepatic injury. Individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize Merrem and this can lead to increased blood levels of Merrem for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Merrem should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
