Patient was educated on contraindications for using Glucovance as follows:

  1. Glucovance is mainly metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Part of it is even excreted unchanged in the urine. If liver and kidney function are deficient, the metabolism and excretion of this medication can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, Glucovance should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic and renal dysfunction. Glucovance is also known to cause deterioration in liver function and consequently, liver disease.
  2. Glucovance usually is contraindicated in individuals with history of sulfa allergy. If you are allergic to sulfa, please report it to your physician, for further guidance. Also, discuss with your physician regarding all the prescription and OTC medications that you take daily, to avoid any risk of cross reaction with Glucovance.
  3. Individuals with any history of photosensitivity, skin rashes, and sunburns must exercise caution with use of Glucovance and report any of these findings to the physician immediately.
  4. Avoid using Glucovance along with alcohol. This can increase the risk of stomach upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  5. Avoid using Glucovance in patients with history of metabolic acidosis with symptoms like rapid breath and heart rate, confusion, and stomach upset with nausea and vomiting.
