Patient was educated on contraindications for using Flagyl as follows:
- Flagyl induces a very strong sensation of nausea and vomiting with flushing of skin and rapid heart rate, when it is taken with alcohol. Avoid alcohol intake, while on a course of Flagyl. Allow 48 to 72 hours after completion of the course of Flagyl, before consumption of alcohol.
- Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Flagyl. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
- Patients with history of opportunistic infections must be cautious about using Flagyl. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
- Peripheral neuropathy can sometimes get worse with use of Flagyl. Patients with history of peripheral neuropathy are at increased risk for exacerbation of neuropathy with Flagyl. Discuss with your doctor regarding safety with Flagyl use.
- Flagyl is significantly metabolized in the liver. Individuals with compromised liver function cannot metabolize Flagyl and thereby, result in increased blood levels of the drug for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Flagyl should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
