Patient was educated on contraindications for using Erythromycin as follows:
- Erythromycin is significantly metabolized by the liver and long term Erythromycin intake can lead to hepatic injury. Individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize Erythromycin and this can lead to increased blood levels of Erythromycin for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Erythromycin should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Erythromycin is primarily excreted in the bile and secondarily in urine. Individuals with biliary obstructions and compromised renal functions tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Erythromycin should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Erythromycin. Erythromycin should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
- Erythromycin intake can increase the risk for skin rash, ranging from mild to severe exfoliating rash and blisters. Individuals with history of extreme skin rashes and taking Erythromycin should be aware of this response and observe a close watch on the same.
