Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Dabigatran as follows:
- Do not consume alcohol, while you are taking Dabigatran, as alcohol can increase the effects of blood thinner and consequently, make the blood extra thin, thus resulting episodes of hemorrhage and bleeding.
- Keep up with use of laxatives and other measures to prevent constipation. Avoid straining at stool, as this could result in profuse bleeding per rectum.
- Do not discontinue taking this medication without recommendation by your doctor. Abrupt withdrawal from Dabigatran intake can result in clot formation and consequent DVT, pulmonary embolism, and development of stroke.
- Evenly space out the doses of Dabigatran and take the dose at the scheduled time every day. Keeping to the schedule of Dabigatran intake helps to avoid forgetting the medication.
- Use an electric razor, while shaving, as shaving with a regular razor carries a significant risk for sustaining cuts and consequent bleeding.
