Patient was educated on contraindications for using Bactrim as follows:
- Long term Bactrim intake can lead to hepatic injury, thus compromising liver function. So, Bactrim is contraindicated in individuals with history of hepatic injury and altered liver functions.
- Sulfamethoxazole undergoes hepatic metabolism in the body and is excreted in the urine. Trimethoprim undergoes minimal metabolism in the liver and the rest is excreted in the urine unchanged. Individuals with history of liver and kidney disease cannot metabolize and excrete Bactrim normally and tend to retain the drug in the body longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Bactrim should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Bactrim. Bactrim should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
- Patients with history of opportunistic infections must be cautious about using Bactrim. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
