Patient was educated on contraindications for using Avandamet as follows:

  1. Avandamet is mainly metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Part of it is even excreted unchanged in the urine. If liver and kidney function are deficient, the metabolism and excretion of this medication can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, Avandamet should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic and renal dysfunction. Avandamet is also known to cause deterioration in liver function and consequently, liver disease.
  2. Avandamet significantly increases the risk for bladder cancer and is contraindicated in individuals with history of bladder cancer.
  3. Avoid using Avandamet along with alcohol. This can increase the risk of stomach upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
