Patient was educated on contraindications for taking Pioglitazone as follows:

  1. Pioglitazone is mainly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of this medication can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, Pioglitazone should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic dysfunction. Pioglitazone is also known to cause deterioration in liver function and consequently, liver disease.
  2. Pioglitazone is mainly excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with renal disease cannot excrete these medications normally. Pioglitazone can stay in circulation for longer time and can be toxic. So, Pioglitazone should be used with caution in individuals with compromised renal function.
  3. Pioglitazone significantly increase the risk for bladder cancer and is contraindicated in individuals with history of bladder cancer.
  4. Pioglitazone is also known to increase the risk for heart failure significantly and so, is contraindicated in individuals with history of heart disease and compromised cardiac function.
  5. Pioglitazone is known to increase the risk for osteoporosis and so, is contraindicated in individuals with risk for osteoporosis, such as, females in menopause.
