Patient/caregiver was educated on risk factors for contact dermatitis activation as follows:

  1. Various chemicals used during design, manufacture, and assembly of plastic products can cause contact dermatitis and consequently, individuals working in this industry are at increased risk to present with the same.
  2. Rubber is an important trigger that can initiate contact dermatitis response. Construction workers handling elevator belts, hoses, and tubes, consumer industry workers handling footwear and sports goods, healthcare industry workers handling surgical gloves, contraceptives, and catheters can present with contact dermatitis due to increased contact exposure to rubber.
  3. Latex could be used in the manufacture of contraceptive devices like condoms & diaphragms, gloves, footwear, carpets, clothing, undergarments, electronic devices, and many other items used in everyday life. Individuals with allergy to latex can present with dermatitis on contact with any of the latex containing clothing and devices.
  4. Individuals could also present with contact dermatitis from contact with textile products, such as, silk and polyester. Many dyes used during manufacture of clothing and animal fur used for manufacture of winter clothing can also act as triggers for initiating a dermatitis response. Individuals with allergy to various dyes and textile materials can present with dermatitis on contact with these products.
