Patient was educated on complications of ulcerative colitis as follows:
- Risk for clot formation
- Reduced fluid absorption in the large intestines and dehydration can increase the risk for an individual to form blood clots.
- Anemia
- If the blood loss is heavy, patients can present with symptoms of iron deficiency anemia, such as, extreme shortness of breath, pale skin and mucous membranes, dizziness, fatigue, and exhaustion.
- Osteoporosis
- Anti-inflammatory steroid medications prescribed for managing the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can result in weakening of bones and steroid induced osteoporosis in long run and can result in pathological fractures.
