Patient was educated on complications of ischemic bowel disease as follows:
- Ischemic bowel disease is a serious emergency condition and should be acted upon immediately, for better outcome.
- The delay in treating the condition can lead to:
- Inflammation of bowel- Injured segment of intestines result in inflammation of intestines, swelling, and abdominal distension.
- Necrosis and Gangrene- Tissue death due to lack of oxygen supply, secondary to reduced blood flow.
- Perforation of bowel- Necrosed and dead intestinal tissue will lead to easy perforation of bowel and leaking of intestinal contents.
- Peritonitis- Leaking of intestinal contents secondary to necrosis and gangrene can result in peritonitis, which is inflammation of peritoneum, a serous membrane that forms the lining of the abdominal cavity.
