Patient was educated regarding complications of hemorrhoids as follows:

  1. Pain
  • External hemorrhoids and prolapsed internal hemorrhoids can be extremely painful to touch and during bowel movement.
  1. Bleeding
  • Both internal and external hemorrhoids can bleed heavily and if unchecked, can lead to anemia over time.
  1. Thrombus formation
  • The hemorrhoids can form clots and lead to acute exacerbation of episodes of pain.
  1. Infection
  • External hemorrhoids and prolapsed internal hemorrhoids can cause pruritus and inflammation.
  • Intense itching with poor hygiene can lead to recurrent infections in the anal region, giving rise to complications like perianal abscess.
  1. Tenesmus
  • Chronically inflamed hemorrhoids can lead to tenesmus, which is a constant inclination to have a bowel movement.
