Patient was educated on complications of fluid retention in dialysis patients as follows:

  1. The most common reason for fluid retention in dialysis patients is noncompliance with limitations recommended on fluid intake.
  2. Excess fluid volume in the circulation can result in uncontrolled blood pressure and consequently, can result in episodes of stroke.
  3. Fluid backup can occur into the lungs and extremities too and result in episodes of extreme shortness of breath and edema.
  4. Excess fluid retained by the body can act as an overload on the heart and can result in weakening of the heart muscle and progressive enlargement of the heart.
  5. Excess fluid retained in the body mandates withdrawing of more fluid during the dialysis appointment. This can result in episodes of hypotension and big fluctuations in the blood pressure of the individual. Individuals can be dizzy with very low energy levels and appear drained out, after their dialysis appointment.
  6. Excess fluid volume can even necessitate increasing the number of dialysis appointments in a week.
