Patient/caregiver was educated on complications of head injury as follows:
- Fracture of skull: Moderate to severe head injury can result in fracture of the skull bones, resulting in an open head injury.
- Trauma to the brain: The fractured bone of the skull can sometimes penetrate the protective coverings around the brain, meninges, and injure the brain tissue resulting in severe trauma to the brain.
- Speech difficulty: Moderate to severe head injury can lead to damage to the area of brain controlling speech. Individuals with this kind of injury can present with speech difficulty and problems with expression.
- Coma: Severe injury to the brain can also result in persistent loss of consciousness and life-threatening coma states.
- Behavior & memory changes: Brain damage from moderate to severe head injury can result in increased risk for behavior changes during immediate time period post-injury. Individuals with this injury present a risk to manifest early onset of dementia and memory loss in years to come.
