Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Montelukast as follows:

  1. Notify your doctor of any activation of symptoms of allergy and acute asthma, progressively increasing shortness of breath, any episodes of recurrent chest infections, despite compliance with Montelukast, so that, your dosage on Montelukast could be revised.
  2. Montelukast is extensively metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, which are eliminated in the feces. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of Montelukast could be compromised. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in increased risk for side-effects and consequent toxicity with the medication. Dose reduction could be ordered accordingly, in individuals with history of compromised liver function. Close monitoring of liver function can help prevent development of toxicity with Montelukast intake, especially in individuals with compromised liver function. Observe compliance with periodical liver function studies ordered.
  3. If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose, to avoid risk of overdose. Notify your doctor and other health care personnel regarding your dose noncompliance.
