Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Montelukast as follows:
Hematologic side-effects
- Montelukast carries significant risk of lowering the platelet count, resulting in episodes of easy and unexplained bruising and nasal bleeding. Individuals, secondary to Montelukast intake, can present with easy bruising and small purple patches on the skin due to reduced clotting ability of blood and episodes of poorly controlled bleeding into the skin.
Other constitutional side-effects
- Montelukast use can result in flu like symptoms with mild fever, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, sneezing, sinus irritation, and generalized body pains. Most of these side-effects with Montelukast intake can be self-limiting and resolve over a period of time. Report any unresolved flu like symptoms with Montelukast intake to your physician or other health care personnel, to accommodate necessary changes in your plan of care.
