Patient/caregiver was educated on pathophysiology of cellulitis as follows:

  1. Cellulitis is a condition caused by infection of the skin, resulting in redness and painful swelling of the affected skin site.
  2. This infection could be caused by bacteria or fungi, but bacteria are the most common offending agent causing cellulitis.
  3. Cellulitis usually involves the outer layers of the skin, but depending on the severity of infection, can also involve the deeper layers of skin.
  4. Cellulitis, when mild, can be localized and involve skin limited to one site. In severe cases, the infecting agents can enter the lymph and bloodstream, involving skin diffusely all over the body.
  5. Entering the blood and lymph, the infection can also spread to distant body sites involving internal organs, such as, liver, stomach, intestines, kidney, heart, brain, muscles, and bones.
