Patient was educated on trans fats as follows:

  1. Trans fats are a kind of very unhealthy fats found naturally in small quantities in some meat and dairy products.
  2. Significant amounts of trans fats are produced during refining and removing the odor, while manufacturing commercial vegetable oils. Refined vegetable oils are less likely to go stale and so, food items made using these refined oils have longer shelf life.
  3. As refined vegetable oils are high in trans fats, increased utilization of these oils during cooking contribute to increased consumption of trans fats.
  4. Increased consumption of trans fats can lead to elevation of LDL or bad cholesterol and lowering of HDL or good cholesterol.
  5. Thus, trans fats are associated with high risk for HTN, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and stroke and so, are associated with poor health.
  6. So, while making choices for fatty foods, it is important to avoid foods high in trans fats and focus on foods that are low or zero in trans-fat content.
