Patient was educated on role of fats and lipids in the body as follows:
- Together with carbohydrates and proteins, fats are one of the major nutrients. Fats store rich energy and each gram of fat, upon metabolism, yields 9 calories of energy. Deficiency of fats can result in energy deprivation and weakness.
- Fats form an important component of cell membrane, which surrounds the cells in various organs of the body. Surrounding the cells, fats control the movement of different substances, such as, sodium, calcium, potassium, and various chemicals, into and out of cells, thus helping with biological functions of the body organs. Deficiency of fats can interfere with movement of various minerals and chemicals into and out of cells and result in compromised biological functions of the body organs.
- Surrounding various body tissues and organs, such as, eyes, brain, and kidneys, fat offers an insulation and a layer of protection for internal organs.
- Fats and cholesterol are needed synthesis of bile salts & bile acids, which are needed for important for digestion & absorption of fats in the small intestine.
