Patient was educated on sources of complex carbohydrates as follows:
- Complex carbohydrates are richer in fiber compared to simple carbohydrates. They are made up of longer chains of sugar molecules and are broken down into simple units during metabolism.
- This breakdown into simpler units consumes time and so, complex carbohydrates are slower to digest.
- The slow digestion of complex carbohydrates results in slow rise of blood glucose and so, does not result in sugar rush and sudden spike in blood glucose, unlike simple carbohydrates.
- As they are slow to digest, complex carbohydrates act as longer lasting energy source and can be filling for longer duration. This can contribute to reduced intake and help with weight loss in obese individuals and diabetics.
