Patient was educated on sources of simple carbohydrates as follows:

  1. Simple carbohydrates are made up of smaller chains of sugar molecules and are easier & quicker to digest.
  2. This quick digestion of simple carbohydrates contributes to the sugar rush and sudden spike in blood glucose.
  3. As they are easy to digest and result in sharp increase in blood glucose, simple carbohydrates can act as quick and short-acting energy source.
  4. Plain glucose or table sugar, fructose or fruit sugar, sucrose or cane sugar, and lactose or milk sugar are examples of simple carbohydrates.
  5. Sources of simple carbohydrates include food items such as, plain sugar and sugar added products such as creams, syrups, sodas, chocolate/candy, sports drinks, canned fruits, breakfast cereals, and bakery products like cookies, muffins, & cakes.
  6. Fruits and 100% fruit juice concentrates, milk & milk products, such as, cheese, butter, and yogurt, are also rich sources of simple carbohydrates.
  7. Food items listed with added brown sugar, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, and maple syrup can be rich sources of simple carbohydrates.
