Patient was educated on sources of simple carbohydrates as follows:
- Simple carbohydrates are made up of smaller chains of sugar molecules and are easier & quicker to digest.
- This quick digestion of simple carbohydrates contributes to the sugar rush and sudden spike in blood glucose.
- As they are easy to digest and result in sharp increase in blood glucose, simple carbohydrates can act as quick and short-acting energy source.
- Plain glucose or table sugar, fructose or fruit sugar, sucrose or cane sugar, and lactose or milk sugar are examples of simple carbohydrates.
- Sources of simple carbohydrates include food items such as, plain sugar and sugar added products such as creams, syrups, sodas, chocolate/candy, sports drinks, canned fruits, breakfast cereals, and bakery products like cookies, muffins, & cakes.
- Fruits and 100% fruit juice concentrates, milk & milk products, such as, cheese, butter, and yogurt, are also rich sources of simple carbohydrates.
- Food items listed with added brown sugar, dextrose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, and maple syrup can be rich sources of simple carbohydrates.
