Patient was educated on role of carbohydrates as follows:

  1. Complex carbohydrates are richer in fiber and the fiber content of complex carbohydrates helps with slowing absorption of glucose. This can prevent sudden increase in blood sugar immediately after meal and helps with improving blood sugar control, especially in diabetics.
  2. The fiber content of complex carbohydrates also helps with slowing absorption of fats and thus contribute to lowering the lipid levels, especially in individuals with history of elevated blood cholesterol and other unhealthy fats.
  3. The fiber content of complex carbohydrates can add to the daily fiber requirements helpful to promote intestinal health and prevent development of slowed bowels & constipation.
  4. Complex carbohydrates, due to their rich fiber content, can help with an individual feeling full for longer duration and so, contribute to reduced intake. This reduced intake with complex carbohydrates can help with achieving weight loss goals in obese individuals.
