Patient was educated on simple and complex carbohydrates as follows:
- Carbohydrates form a major element of our diet and provide significant amount of energy during metabolism.
- Carbohydrates are mainly divided into simple and complex carbohydrates.
- Simple carbohydrates are made up of smaller chains of sugar molecules and are easier & quicker to digest. This quick digestion of simple carbohydrates contributes to the sugar rush and sudden spike in blood glucose. As they are easy to digest and result in sharp increase in blood glucose, simple carbohydrates can act as quick and short-acting energy source.
- Complex carbohydrates are made up of longer chains of sugar molecules and are broken down into simple units during metabolism. This breakdown into simpler units consumes time and so, complex carbohydrates are slower to digest. The slow digestion of complex carbohydrates results in slow rise of blood glucose and so, does not contribute to sugar rush and sudden spike in blood glucose. As they are slow to digest, complex carbohydrates can act as longer lasting energy source.
