Patient/caregiver was provided instructions regarding measures to promote bladder emptying as follows:
- During voiding make sure you are seated comfortably on the toilet with feet rested properly on the ground. Allow privacy for yourself, which can enhance your comfort and ease of voiding.
- Relax while passing urine. This helps with maintaining flow of urine, which contributes towards improved emptying of bladder.
- If the flow of urine stops before the bladder is completely emptied, you can employ the following measures to help improve bladder emptying.
- Try slightly leaning forward for 15 – 30 seconds, sit up straight again, and try to pass urine again.
- While attempting to urinate, leave a tap open and let a small stream of water run down. The sound of running water helps effective bladder contractions and improve emptying of bladder.
- Gently tapping over the bladder using two fingers can help stimulate the bladder to contract and empty better.
- Walk around in the restroom for a minute or two, sit back on the toilet, and try to pass urine again.
- Placing a washcloth soaked in warm water on the lower abdomen/pubic area can help improve the strength of bladder contraction and contribute to better bladder emptying.
