Patient/caregiver was provided instructions to practice double voiding as follows:

  1. Double voiding is a pattern bladder training to help individuals with difficulty emptying the bladder completely. This technique allows an individual some extra time for the restroom trip to allow the bladder empty completely.
  2. Double voiding involves attempting to pass urine more than once each time the toilet was used.
  3. During voiding make sure you are seated comfortably on the toilet with feet rested properly on the ground. Allow privacy for yourself, which can enhance your comfort and ease of voiding.
  4. Relax while passing urine. This helps with maintaining flow of urine, which contributes towards improved emptying of bladder.
  5. When the flow of urine completely stops, take a break for 30 seconds to a minute sitting on the toilet quietly.
  6. Try slightly leaning forward for 15 – 30 seconds and sit up straight again. Instead you can also walk around in the restroom for a minute or two and sit back on the toilet.
  7. Relax and try to pass urine again. While attempting to urinate, leaving the tap open and letting a small stream of water run or gently tapping over the bladder using two fingers can help stimulate the bladder to contract and empty better.
  8. At the end of the act, you can stretch the abdomen out and attempt a little push to make sure the bladder completely empties and expels any urine left out.
