Patient/caregiver was instructed upon lifestyle measures for individuals with BPH as follows:

Maintain warm environment:

  1. Cold weather can promote contraction of the prostate muscle. This results in the prostate pressing on to the urethra closely, obstruct the urine flow, and worsen symptoms of BPH in individuals with history.
  2. Warm temperatures promote relaxation of the prostate muscle, promotes urine flow, and improve the symptoms in individuals with history of BPH.

Limit intake of caffeinated drinks:

  1. Caffeine acts as a bladder irritant and promotes frequent contractions of the bladder, contributing to increased urge and frequency episodes in individuals with BPH.
  2. Limiting intake of caffeinated drinks, especially around the evening and bedtime, can help prevent bladder irritation and bladder contractions.
  3. This can help reduce the urge and frequency of urination.
  4. Reduced frequency of urination, especially during the night, can help individuals with severe nocturia and promote restful sleep.

Limit intake of alcoholic beverages:

  1. Alcoholic beverages act as bladder irritants and promote frequent contractions of the bladder, contributing to increased urge and frequency episodes in individuals with BPH.
  2. Limiting intake of alcoholic beverages, especially around the evening and bedtime, can help prevent bladder irritation and bladder contractions. This can help reduce the urge and frequency of urination.
  3. Reduced frequency of urination, especially during the night, can help individuals with severe nocturia and promote restful sleep.

Limit intake of some prescription drug use:

  1. Contraction of urinary bladder is essential to push the urine out and help with bladder emptying.
  2. Medications belonging to antihistamine, antidepressant, muscle relaxant, and some other groups, contribute to relaxation of the bladder and increase urine retention in the bladder.
  3. Individuals with BPH inherently present with obstruction to urine outflow and difficulty to empty the bladder.
  4. Use of the above mentioned medications in men with BPH can worsen the obstruction to urine outflow and complicate the situation further.
  5. So, limiting use of these medications in men with history of BPH can help with improved relief of BPH symptoms.
