Patient/caregiver was instructed upon management measures for BPH as follows:

Management measures for BPH essentially depend on the extent of symptoms and discomfort individuals present with.

Minimal to mild symptoms:

  1. Individuals with minimal to mild symptoms can be managed by lifestyle modification measures, such as, bladder retraining, limiting intake of caffeinated drinks, and others.

Mild to moderate symptoms:

  1. Individuals with mild to moderate symptoms can be managed with medication therapy.
  2. Some medications help with relaxing the bladder muscle, which helps with reduced inhibition to urine flow and makes urination easier.
  3. Some medications prevent the hormonal changes contributing to BPH, which results in shrinking the size of prostate gland.
  4. Decreased prostate size results in reduced inhibition to urine flow and makes urination easier.

Moderate to severe symptoms:

  1. Individuals with moderate to severe symptoms can be managed with minimally invasive surgical procedures and laser therapy, which destroy the excess prostate growth, reduce inhibition to urine flow, and makes urination easier.
  2. Many procedures are currently in practice and they have their own merits and demerits.
  3. Your surgeon will decide the one best suites for you, depending on the extent of your symptoms and other health conditions.

In extremely severe cases with heavily grown prostate tissue, your surgeon might consider prostatectomy, which is surgical removal of the entire prostate.
