Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of melatonin as follows:

  1. Melatonin is also believed to play a significant role in controlling the release of sex hormones, such as, androgens and estrogens. By reducing the release of these sex hormones, melatonin plays a significant role in controlling the growth of sex hormone dependent cancers, such as, estrogen dependent breast cancer and androgen dependent prostate cancer.
  2. Melatonin is believed to contribute towards improving the findings of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance in women belonging to the perimenopausal age-group. Melatonin supplements by helping to improve these findings, can contribute towards relief of perimenopause and menopause symptoms.
  3. Cluster headache is a painful headache, occurring as an intense pain around one eye or on one side of the head. Cluster headaches occur in cyclical patterns, with bouts of headaches separated by intermittent episodes free of headache. The reason for cluster headache is poorly defined, but disturbance with the circadian rhythm regulating the sleep-wake cycle is considered to play an important role. Melatonin supplements, by contributing to setting the circadian rhythm in place, is believed to offer relief in individuals with history of cluster headaches.
  4. Melatonin is believed to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and so, can help in relieving symptoms of acute inflammation.
  5. Melatonin is also believed to act as an immunostimulant and so, can help in strengthening the immunity in individuals with history of immunosuppression.
