Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses and mechanism of action of phenazopyridine as follows:

  1. Phenazopyridine is a medication that has a local anesthetic effect on the inner lining of the lower urinary tract.
  2. The precise mechanism of action of phenazopyridine is unknown.
  3. By having an anesthetic effect on the mucosa of urinary tract, phenazopyridine numbs the mucosa of the urinary tract, thus reducing the sensitivity for pain and irritation.
  4. By reducing the sensitivity for pain in the urinary tract, phenazopyridine helps with control of pain and discomfort associated with urinary tract infections. Phenazopyridine also helps with relief of pain associated with any surgery and trauma involving the urinary tract.
  5. By reducing the sensitivity of the urinary tract mucosa for pain, irritation, and discomfort, phenazopyridine soothes the urinary tract mucosa during episodes of urinary tract infection and helps with relief from symptoms of UTI, such as, burning sensation of the urinary tract, urgency, and frequency.
  6. Phenazopyridine also helps with relief from discomfort associated with investigative and therapeutic procedures, such as, endoscopy, passage of urethral sound, and insertion of urinary catheter.
