Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic uses of haloperidol as follows:
Schizophrenia
- Haloperidol can be used for controlling the hallucination, delusions, lack of concentration, and apathy, associated with schizophrenia.
Psychosis
- Haloperidol is used to treat control the aggressive behavior associated with psychosis.
- By controlling the excessive excitation of the brain, haloperidol helps with promoting sedation, controlling the racing thoughts associated with the psychotic states and thus, helps with controlling the unrealistic fears and illogical thought processes psychotic patients may have.
Movement disorders
- A balance between the various neurotransmitters in the brain is essential for control of fine movements and balance.
- An imbalance with these neurotransmitters is considered responsible for chorea, which involves sudden, involuntary, jerky movements of the extremities.
- Haloperidol can help with establishing this balance in the neurotransmitter levels and contribute towards preventing chorea.
