Patient/caregiver was instructed upon Imodium and mechanism of action as follows:
- Imodium is a medication used to reduce the intestinal hyper motility and reduce the contractions of intestinal smooth muscle.
- By reducing the contractions and hyper motility of the intestines, Imodium slows down the transit and increases the transit time of intestinal contents.
- Increasing the transit time of intestinal contents helps with increasing the amount of time the contents stay in the intestine.
- Increased intestinal transit time contributes to increased absorption of fluid and electrolytes from the intestinal contents.
- Increased absorption of fluid and electrolytes from the intestinal contents helps with reducing loss of fluid and electrolytes in the loose diarrheal stool.
- By reducing loss of fluid and electrolytes in the stool, Imodium helps with reducing fecal volume and increasing the fecal density.
