Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Ezetimibe as follows:
- Ezetimibe is significantly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, metabolism of Ezetimibe could be slowed down. Slowing down of the drug metabolism can result in increased risk for compromised therapeutic benefits and toxicity with the medication. Also, Ezetimibe has the potential to cause inflammation of liver with consequent damage to the liver function, especially when administered as a combination therapy with other medications, such as, statins.
- Ezetimibe is significantly eliminated in feces and minimally in the urine, by the kidneys. Any block in the intestines could compromise the elimination of Ezetimibe from the body normally, which allows the metabolites of the medication to be reabsorbed back in the intestines and be in the blood stream longer. This increases the risk for side-effects and toxicity with the medication.
- Ezetimibe should be avoided or administered cautiously in individuals with history of compromised liver function and obstruction to the bowel. Labs must be ordered for evaluation of liver function periodically, to evaluate the safety with Ezetimibe administration.
- Do not use this medication if you have history of allergy or serious side-effects to Ezetimibe use.
