Patient was educated on measures to prevent complications due to atrial flutter as follows:

  1. Observe compliance with any anticoagulants prescribed to prevent the risk of clot formation and deposition of embolus in vital organs, thus affecting their function. Also, observe compliance with orders for periodical lab draws that determine risk for clot formation.
  2. Be aware of any signs and symptoms of clot formation and deposition such as, chest pain, evolving stroke. Report any such findings to the physician immediately and seek for medical attention.
  3. Report any findings of chest discomfort, any sudden cough, pain in the deep calf muscles for immediate attention. Also, report any exacerbation of cardiac conditions, such as, uncontrolled blood pressure, deteriorating fluid retention with increasing swelling of extremities, and exacerbation of shortness of breath.
  4. Report any exacerbation of dizziness and altered level of consciousness, which can signify deteriorating state of arrhythmia.
  5. Keep a close watch on the urine volume to report any diminishing output, which can also signify deteriorating arrhythmia and overall functional cardiac status. Timely attention to this complaint can prevent serious complications, such as, renal failure.
