Patient was educated on contraindications for taking Actos as follows:

  1. Actos is mainly metabolized in the liver. If liver function is deficient, the metabolism of this medication can suffer. This can lead to increased blood levels of the medication for longer periods of time, resulting in toxicity and severe side effects. So, Actos should be used with caution in individuals with hepatic dysfunction. Actos is also known to cause deterioration in liver function and consequently, liver disease.
  2. Actos is mainly excreted by the kidneys. Individuals with renal disease cannot excrete these medications normally. Actos can stay in circulation for longer time and can be toxic. So, Actos should be used with caution in individuals with compromised renal function.
  3. Actos significantly increase the risk for bladder cancer and is contraindicated in individuals with history of bladder cancer.
  4. Actos is also known to increase the risk for heart failure significantly and so, is contraindicated in individuals with history of heart disease and compromised cardiac function.
  5. Actos is known to increase the risk for osteoporosis and so, is contraindicated in individuals with risk for osteoporosis, such as, females in menopause.
