Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using xarelto as follows:
- Xarelto is mainly metabolized by the liver. Individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize xarelto and this can lead to increased blood levels of xarelto for longer duration, leading to toxicity and episodes of bleeding. Xarelto should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Xarelto is partially excreted in the urine. Individuals with history of renal damage and compromised renal functions tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity and episodes of bleeding. Xarelto should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Do not use this medication, if you have history of allergy or serious side-effects to xarelto or any other blood thinner medications. In case of allergy with other blood thinner medications, discuss with your doctor regarding your safety with xarelto intake
- Xarelto should be avoided in individuals taking NSAIDs and other blood thinners. Taking Xarelto along with NSAIDs or other blood thinners concurrently can significantly increase the risk for bleeding episodes.
