Patient was educated on the causes of iron deficiency as follows:
- Low Intake
- Major source of iron is dietary iron. Poor intake of nutrition can result in iron deficiency. Also, some foods such as vegetarian diets are low in iron.
- Gastrointestinal Bleeding
- Patients with gastric ulcers, colon polyps can lose small amounts of blood over prolonged periods of time which can lead to iron deficiency.
- Use of uncoated aspirin may also increase the chances of bleeding of peptic ulcers and consequent iron deficiency.
- Menstruation
- Women in menstruating age group lose significant amount of iron during the period every month. This loss of iron over prolonged period can lead to iron deficiency anemia.
