Patient/caregiver was educated on the precautions to be observed while taking methimazole as follows:

  1. Methimazole use is either contraindicated or used with extreme caution in individuals with history of opportunistic infections. White blood cells produced by the bone marrow help fight infections and offer immunity to the body. Methimazole, by virtue of potential to induce bone marrow suppression, can reduce production of white blood cells, thus increasing the risk for lowering immunity and contacting opportunistic infections. Be aware of signs and symptoms of opportunistic infections, such as, recurrent episodes of fever, chills, cough, sore throat, chest congestion, body aches, and flu like symptoms. Any unresolving symptoms of infections should be reported to the physician.
  2. Take methimazole dose at the same time, every day, to avoid forgetting the intake of medication.
  3. Methimazole could be taken on empty stomach. Patients can sometimes present with nausea and vomiting, secondary to methimazole intake. Taking the methimazole dose with some food or snack can counter these unpleasant gastrointestinal side-effects.
  4. Maintain strict compliance with intake of the medication as ordered, with regards to dosage and frequency, to derive the benefit of the medication.
