Patient/caregiver was instructed upon methimazole and mechanism of action of methimazole as follows:
- Methimazole is a medication, used in individuals with overactive thyroid gland, producing excessive amounts of the thyroid hormone.
- Thyroxine, is a natural thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland in the neck and influences the function of every vital organ in the body and basic body metabolism.
- When individuals have overactive thyroid gland, producing excessive amount of thyroxine, they present with high levels of energy and body metabolism.
- Individuals with overactive thyroid gland can present with restlessness, difficulty falling sleep, mood swings, fatigue, anxiety, tremors, diarrhea, muscle weakness, rapid heart rate, and palpitations, thus affecting the function of all vital organs.
- Methimazole works by inhibiting the thyroid gland from producing thyroid hormone in excess.
- Restoration of normal levels of thyroid hormone returns the basic body metabolism to usual levels and contributes to normal functioning of vital organs.
