Patient was educated on the side effects of using Trazodone as follows:
Dizziness
- Trazodone use can result in extreme drowsiness and episodes of confusion, thus contributing to falls and accidents.
- Stay away from activities requiring alertness, such as, driving and operating heavy machinery, until you are used to the side effects caused by trazodone.
Serotonin syndrome
- Trazodone use can result in elevated serotonin levels in the blood.
- This effect of trazodone helps with controlling the depressive symptoms in an individual.
- Highly elevated serotonin levels in the blood have other side-effects, leading to agitation, restless behavior, sleep deprivation, hallucinations, fast heart rate, palpitations, diarrhea and fluid loss from the body, and episodes of loss of consciousness.
- These symptoms put together is called serotonin syndrome. Any and/or all these symptoms should be immediately reported and need to be appropriately followed-up.
Priapism
- Trazodone use in some males can sometimes result in a painful and prolonged penile erection, lasting a few hours and longer.
- Discontinue taking the medication for any further doses and report the finding to the physician immediately.
