Patient was instructed regarding transfer technique for pain management as follows:

  1. Transfer is a technique of pain management, in which you train the mind to produce pleasant, altered sensations of heat and cold in one hand.
  2. As we use ice and cold compress for acute pain and inflammation, try producing the sensation of cold in your hand for management of post-surgical pains and pain associated with inflamed tissues.
  3. As we use heat for muscle pain and stiffness, try producing the sensation of heat for management of pain associated with soft tissue injuries and muscle rigidity.
  4. Apply the hand with the altered sensation of heat/cold to the site of pain.
  5. Train the mind with visualizing transfer of this pleasant altered sensation from the hand into the site of pain.
  6. Since mindful creation and visualization of transfer of altered sensations to the pain site could be difficult when the pain level is high, start practicing transfer technique when the pain level is manageable and gradually move on to practicing it with high pain levels, as you gain more control on practicing the technique.
