Patient was educated on contraindications for using osmotic laxatives as follows:

  1. Osmotic laxatives can cause fluid depletion and dehydration. Caution must be exercised for fluid replacement and rehydration. Also, these laxatives are to be taken with a full 8 oz. glass of water. So, extra caution must be exercised while administering these laxatives for patients placed on fluid limitations, such as, individuals with congestive heart failure and renal failure.
  2. Osmotic laxatives have high amounts of sodium and magnesium. High sodium level in blood is significant risk factor for exacerbation of symptoms of CHF. High magnesium level in blood is significant risk factor for exacerbation of symptoms of arrhythmias
  3. These laxatives usually are contraindicated in individuals with undiagnosed abdominal pain and cramping, as these complaints can deteriorate further with osmotic laxative use.
  4. Osmotic laxatives are contraindicated in individuals with rectal bleed, as these individuals are at risk for exacerbation of this complaint with laxative use.
