Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking opioid pain medications as follows:
- Opioid pain medications are mainly metabolized by the liver and individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize opioid pain medications and this can lead to increased blood levels of opioid pain medications for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Opioid pain medications should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals. Observe compliance with any labs ordered for evaluation of hepatic function.
- Opioid pain medications are mainly excreted in the urine. Individuals with compromised renal functions tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Opioid pain medications should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals. Observe compliance with any labs ordered for evaluation of renal function.
- Do not abuse opioid pain medications by continuing to take the medication, even after the pain has resolved.
- Drink plenty of water with opioid pain medications and keep up with your daily fluid requirements without fail. This can help prevent episodes of constipation. Also, maintain compliance with laxative intake, as recommended by your doctor.
