Patient was educated on side effects of using dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors as follows:

  1. Stomach upset
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common side effects of using dipeptidyl peptidase inhibitors.
  1. Hypoglycemia
  • Dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors can increase the action of incretins, contributing to increase in insulin secretion, thereby reducing the blood sugars.
  • These medications can sometimes result in episodes of serious hypoglycemia.
  1. Muscle pain
  • These medications can sometimes increase risk of muscle and skeletal pains and fatigue.
  1. Fluid retention
  • Though not common, these medications can sometimes result in fluid retention and patients can present with edema, weight gain, trouble breathing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.
  1. Acute pancreatitis
  • A rare, but serious side effect of use of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors include a severe upper abdominal pain, radiating to the back, along with nausea and vomiting.
  1. Acute renal failure
  • A serious, but rare side effect of use of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors include acute renal failure, with gross reduction in urine volume or absolutely no urine formation.
