Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while using bulk laxatives as follows:

  1. Bulk laxatives absorb water and swell, taking lot of space in the intestines. If the space in the intestines is compromised in the first place, such as, in individuals with intestinal strictures or adhesions from previous surgeries, the swollen bulk laxatives can cause severe intestinal blocks, necessitating an emergency. So, bulk laxatives for the most part are contraindicated in such individuals. Let your doctor know about any of such surgical history that can put you at risk for an intestinal block.
  2. Bulk forming laxatives can reduce the absorption of certain prescription medications. Space bulk laxatives out by at least 2 hours from other medications.
  3. If you miss a dose, try taking it at the earliest notice of noncompliance. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the dose scheduled. Do not take an extra dose to try making up for the missed dose.
  4. Report any lack of bowel movement for 3 days, while using bulk laxatives.
