Patient was instructed upon measures to avoid excess of sodium intake as follows:

  1. Salt is the major source of sodium in our diets.
  2. Clarify with your doctor regarding the amount of salt allowed for you every day.
  3. If you are prescribed a diet with no added salt, try not to have salt shaker on your dinner table. Use herbs and spices to help flavor foods.
  4. If you are prescribed a low sodium diet or 2 grams’ sodium diet, the total daily intake should be no more than a teaspoonful.
  5. Be aware that salt is premixed in your frozen foods and this will count towards your daily allowed intake. Avoid frozen foods and try to have freshly made food on your meal.
  6. Try avoiding salt substitutes, as they contain lots of potassium and is not healthy for your heart.
