Patient was educated on Pioglitazone and its mechanism of action as follows:

  1. Pioglitazone is an oral antidiabetic medication, used especially in patients with type-2 diabetes.
  2. Individuals with type 2 diabetes develop resistance to insulin produced in the body. So, they present with elevated blood sugar.
  3. Pioglitazone acts by reducing insulin resistance and increasing the sensitivity of body cells to insulin. Pioglitazone also results in synthesis of new fat cells.
  4. This leads to increased glucose uptake by the body cells and consequently, result in reduced blood sugar and control of diabetes.
  5. Control of blood sugars over time with Pioglitazone also results in lowering of hemoglobin A1c, which is an indicator of blood glucose control over the past 2 to 3 months.
  6. Pioglitazone can be used either alone or in combination with other medications, such as, metformin for better management of the blood sugars.
